Viktor Hovland Reveals Why ‘Double Bogeys’ Lead to Conspiracy Theories
Viktor Hovland is teeing off Thursday at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course despite going through plenty of struggles recently. Hovland has been trying to find his game and even skipped the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week to work on getting back into form. Outside of the course, Hovland has taken up an interest in conspiracy theories. Ahead of the Genesis, the Norwegian cracked a joke about thinking about some of those conspiracy theories on the course when things aren’t going his way on the Life On Tour Podcast.
“In society today, we’re sold a narrative that is kind of hard to question… How did the, it might not be the Egyptians that build the pyramids… Is there an afterlife or not?” Hovland pondered. “You take life for granted that you are just hormones and chemicals… and you are evolved from monkeys. Okay, maybe that is part of it, but what else is there?”
“It’s cool to question and think about,” Hovland said. “Especially when you’re out here making double bogeys, you need something to think about.”

The Norwegian star has likely had plenty of time to think about these things.
Hovland has played in three PGA Tour events this season but has failed to finish in the top 20 in any of them. His best finish of 2025 so far came in a tie for 22nd place at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. His slide has been going on for more than a year now. Since winning the Tour Championship at East Lake in 2023, he has just two top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour. The current World No. 9 tinkered with his swing at the start of the 2024 season and hasn’t been able to find his groove since.
That coincided with multiple swing coach changes.
There’s no question that Hovland wants to get back to competing for big trophies and major championships like he was during that hot streak in 2023. He showed even during his cold spell last season that he still has that ability. The 27-year-old finished third at the PGA Championship at Valhalla.
For someone who is struggling to find his best golf on a week-to-week basis, maybe taking your mind off of things with a conspiracy theory during a round isn’t the worst idea.
